Evidence for Shock Acceleration in the Binary Pulsar System Psr B1259-63

چکیده
The PSR B1259-63 system (Johnston et al. 1992, 1994) was observed near periastron by the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory in January 1994. This system contains a rapidly rotating pulsar and a Be star in a highly eccentric binary orbit. We report the discovery by the OSSE instrument of unpulsed emission with a hard power-law spectrum between 50 and 200 keV from the direction of this system. Neither diiuse galactic background emission nor nearby X-ray binaries contribute signiicantly to the detected ux. Our results are particularly important for the theory of interaction of pulsars with gaseous environments. We interpret the hard X-ray emission as synchrotron radiation from relativistic particles of the PSR B1259-63 wind being shocked and accelerated within the binary. Our results indicate, for the rst time in a binary pulsar, that shock acceleration can increase the original energy of pulsar wind particles by a factor > 10, despite the high synchrotron and inverse Compton cooling rates near periastron. The derived shock properties (eeciency, radiation spectrum, timescale) are relevant for a broad class of high-energy astrophysical sources characterized by shocked relativistic plasmas subject to strong radiative cooling.

Suzaku Observations of Psr B1259−63: a New Manifestation of Relativistic Pulsar Wind
We observed PSR B1259−63, a young non-accreting pulsar orbiting around a Be star SS 2883, eight times with the Suzaku satellite from July to September 2007, to characterize the X-ray emission arising from the interaction between a pulsar relativistic wind and Be star outflows. The X-ray spectra showed a featureless continuum in 0.6–10 keV, modeled by a power law with a wide range of photon inde...

We report on results of X-ray observations of the unique radio pulsar/Be star binary PSR B1259?63, obtained using the ASCA satellite two weeks before, during , and two weeks after the pulsar's most recent periastron passage on January 9, 1994. The source was detected at all three epochs, with an X-ray luminosity in the 1{10 keV band of 110 34 (d=2 kpc) 2 erg s ?1 at the pre-and post-periastron ...
متن کاملOrigin of the Transient Unpulsed Radio Emission from the Psr B1259−63 Binary System
We discuss the interpretation of transient, unpulsed radio emission detected from the unique pulsar/Be-star binary system PSR B1259−63. Extensive monitoring of the 1994 and 1997 periastron passages has shown that the source flares over a 100-day interval around periastron, varying on time-scales as short as a day and peaking at 60 mJy (∼ 100 times the apastron flux density) at 1.4 GHz. Interpre...
متن کاملX-ray emission from the PSR B1259–63 system near apastron
The PSR B1259–63 system contains a 47 ms radio pulsar in a highly eccentric binary with a Be-star companion. Strongly time variable X-ray emission was reported from this system as the pulsar was near apastron in 1992-early 1993. The variability was primarily deduced from an apparent non-detection of the PSR B1259-63 system during a first pre-apastron ROSAT observation in February 1992. We have ...
متن کاملGamma-rays from binary system with energetic pulsar and Be star with aspherical wind: PSR B1259-63/SS2883
At least one massive binary system containing an energetic pulsar, PSR B125963/SS2883, has been recently detected in the TeV γ-rays by the HESS telescopes. These γ-rays are likely produced by particles accelerated in the vicinity of the pulsar and/or at the pulsar wind shock, in comptonization of soft radiation from the massive star. However, the process of γ-ray production in such systems can ...
